Raj Kapoor, born on 14 December 1924, is one of India’s most beloved and respected actors, directors and producers in the Hindi film industry, also known as Bollywood. He started his career as an actor in the 1940s and was soon heralded as the “greatest showman of Indian cinema”.

With a career spanning over five decades, Kapoor was best known for his larger-than-life persona, charisma, and romanticism that made him one of the biggest movie stars in the Indian subcontinent. His classic films such as Awaara (1951), Shree 420 (1955), Jaagte Raho (1956), Sangam (1964) and many others have become Indian cinema staples.
