Uttam Kumar (3 September 1926 – 24 July 1980) was an Indian film actor, director, producer, singer and music director who predominantly worked in Bengali cinema. He is widely regarded as the greatest actor of Bengali cinema, and his acting style is considered influential in the Bengali film industry. He was the all-time highest-grossing star of Bengali cinema and is widely remembered for his iconic roles in films such as Chiriyakhana, Grihajuddha, Harano Sur and Saptapadi.

Uttam Kumar: Life and Career

Uttam Kumar was born in Kolkata, India to Mahamaya and Ganesh Bandyopadhyay, who were both actors in the Bengali film industry. He started his career as a stage actor and worked in several theatre productions. He made his debut in Bengali cinema with the film Drishtidan in 1948. He went on to act in more than 200 films in his career, many of which are considered classics. He worked with many renowned directors such as Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha and Ajoy Kar. His performance in films such as Chiriyakhana, Grihajuddha, Harano Sur and Saptapadi are considered iconic and highly influential in the Bengali film industry.

He was the first Bengali actor to receive a National Film Award for Best Actor in 1963 for his performance in the film, Chiriyakhana. He was also awarded the prestigious Padma Shri award in 1969 by the Government of India.

Uttam Kumar: Personal Life

Uttam Kumar was married to Gauri Devi in 1958 and they had two children, Gautam and Ganga. He was known to be a private person and kept his personal life away from the public eye. However, he was rumoured to have had several relationships with actresses such as Suchitra Sen, Aparna Sen and Madhabi Mukherjee.

He died of a heart attack in 1980, aged 54. He was cremated with full state honours at the Keoratala Burning Ghat in Kolkata.
